The objective of writing this article is to produce a theoretical reflection on the teaching of potentiation through the methodology of problem solving for elementary school students, using as a research source all publicscientific communications from the I to the XIII National Meeting of Mathematical Education - ENEM. The research has a qualitative nature and uses the words power and potentiation as a search criterion in the annais. Thus we found a total of nine scientific communications with at least one of these words in their titles. At the end of the collection, reading and analysis of the articles found, we conclude  that  even in a national configuration event there is  a scarcity regarding the development of research related to the teaching of potentiation, which is further accentuated in the context of problem solving. Thus, we find a favorable space for the development of proposals and research that link these two themes.
