ETHNOMATEMATIC PRACTICES IN LAND MEASUREMENT: A STUDY ON THE CALCULATION OF AREAS

The Ethnomathematics has as one of its approaches to unveil knowledge from different social groups. In this sense, the present study aims to discuss the ethnomathematical knowledge inserted in the land measurement practice of farmers in the interior of Ceará. From a qualitative approach on the ethnomathematical practices described by the consulted farmers, we found that even using measurement units and measurement instruments peculiar to the context, equivalences are made with standard units and contemporary technologies. In addition, we have identified that the methods for measuring the quadratic, triangular and elliptical terrains analyzed have similarities with methods used by groups from other regions.  To give voice and time to ethnomathematical knowledge demonstrates that modernity and tradition are intrinsic parts to the corpus of knowledge of humanity.
