This article investigates the teachers‘ proposal for teaching calculus as adhered to by the Institute of Education of Rio de Janeiro, a renowned institution for training teachers during the 1930s. Teacher training at the Institute of Education executed a proposal that did not entirely divorce theory and practice and sought to bridge the gap between knowledge of the subject and teaching the subject itself. This marked an era of emphasis on the methods for teaching as justified in the scientific literature on education. As this investigated period indicates, the proposal of the institute concerns itself as a work of historical studies affiliated to the History of Education, and more closely, the History of Mathematics Education.
