Quintais urbanos : lugares na paisagem cultural em Cuiabá

ABSTRACT: Backyards are elements of the landscape linked to the home space of some Brazilian cities as part of the cultural mixing produced after the Portuguese intervention in the country. Besides being vegetation reserves, along the urban transformation in Cuiabá, these spaces have acquired distinct forms, diverse functions and various meanings for the population and for the city itself. When being considered a space next to house, backyards have been undervalued, giving more importance to the built areas, being a more lived space, than communicated. The thesis aims to understand the importance of backyards in the cultural landscape of Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil, taking into account three interrelated dimensions: the city, the house and people. Of qualitative character and in interdisciplinary approach, the research was established in the interface between cultural geography, urban communication and urban anthropology, taking as a reference also the works developed in other disciplines as ethnobotanical and architecture and urbanism, to interpret backyard as constituent place of the cultural landscape in Cuiabá. In this regard, the understanding of backyards as a social construction involving material and symbolic dimensions was considered. Several methodological procedures were performed, such as direct observation, semi-structured interview in ten backyards in nine neighborhoods of the city. Reinforcing communicational dimension of backyards in the cultural landscape of the city, technical procedures were used to record and reconstruct imagery of the backyards such as photographs, producing maps and drawing sketches. Research allowed organizing cuiabano backyard in three categories: domestic, collective and commercial, denoting the transformations of the urban spatiality itself. In the expansion of the urban perimeter and verticalization of the city, presence of the backyards represents, even today, a singularity in a tricentenary city and mining origin as Cuiabá. Yards are living collections of the city that favor the maintenance of biodiversity, but also socialization activities and multiple knowledge favorable in the cultural inventory of the city. We observed the need, nowadays, of backyards as places of care and mental and physical health, as evidenced by the pandemic generated by Covid-19.
