Resumo: In the military environment, physical activity is essential to maintain the operational level and adequate health status of the troops. The social isolation resulting from the COVID19 pandemic had a negative impact on aspects related to a healthy lifestyle, including in the armed forces. Among them, the lack of physical activity has the potential to negatively affect the sleep quality and body composition of soldiers, and its dysfunctions can cause risks for military activities. Objective: To relate physical activity with the quality of sleep and body composition of young soldiers from Colégio Militar de Santa Maria – RS. Methodology: Cross-sectional study with 68 male soldiers, aged 18 to 21 years. The short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the adapted version of the Kasari Fit Index were used to assess the level and index of physical activity, respectively. To assess body composition, BMI and fat percentage were collected using the skinfold method. To assess sleep quality, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Spearman correlation, Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests were used in the statistical analysis, with SPSS 25 and a significance level of p<0.05. Results: According to IPAQ criteria, 64.7% of the sample was classified as physically active and 35.3% as very active. Regarding the body composition of the sample, 66.2% had a fat percentage compatible with military activity, classified as excellent, good or above average; 72.1% had a normal BMI classification, 22.0% were overweight and 5.9% were obese. There was a strong negative correlation between physical activity and fat percentage, where ρ(68)= -0.785, and a moderate negative correlation between physical activity and BMI, where ρ(68)= -0.487. A statistically significant difference was observed between the fat percentage of physically very active participants (median=9.72) and active (median=14.03)(p<0.001). BMI differs statistically significantly between physically very active (median=22.52) and active (median=23.93)(p=0.005). The analyzes between physical activity and sleep quality showed a significant association between the level of physical activity and the quality of sleep in the sample, where χ2(1)=6.858, p = 0.009. There is a statistically significant difference in the physical activity index of participants classified as having good (median=48) and poor (median=32) sleep. There was a moderate negative correlation between the physical activity index and the sleep quality scores, where ρ(68) = -0.557, p < 0.001 so that the higher the physical activity index, the lower the PSQI and better sleep quality. Conclusion: The entire sample was physically active despite the period of restrictions imposed by the pandemic. Higher levels and indices of physical activity are associated with more adequate body composition, and the results point to a positive association between physical activity and sleep quality in young soldiers, so that greater physical activity is associated with better sleep quality.

Higher levels and indices of physical activity are associated with more adequate body composition, and the results point to a positive association between physical activity and sleep quality in young soldiers, so that greater physical activity is associated with better sleep quality. Submitted by Clarice Rosa Machado (clarice.machado@ufn.edu.br) on 2022-02-10T20:30:00Z No. of bitstreams: 2 Dissertacao_ViníciusJacondinoIahnke_Tede.pdf: 970814 bytes, checksum: fa05552e129029a12c12437fca77c1aa (MD5) license_rdf: 0 bytes, checksum: d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2022-02-10T20:30:00Z (GMT). description In the military environment, physical activity is essential to maintain the operational level and adequate health status of the troops. The social isolation resulting from the COVID19 pandemic had a negative impact on aspects related to a healthy lifestyle, including in the armed forces.
