This dissertation is linking to the Graduate Program in Teaching Science and Mathematics of the Franciscan University. The research has the main goal to investigate to what extent the use of handling material can contribute to the meaningful learning of algebraic concepts for students of a ninth grade class in the middle school. The research subjects were six students from a private school in the municipality of Santa Maria and the meetings happened in the opposite turn to that of the regular classes. The actions were organizing in two different moments. Initially a diagnostic test was applying that had as objective to identify the subsumpitons that the students had on the subject in question. The second moment was the development of a sequence of activities with the assistance of handling materials. The analysis of this moment was basing on an interpretative descriptive analysis. Data collection was donning through records of student activities and observations made by the teacher. The theory that guides research is Ausubel's Significant Learning Theory (1978, 2003). At the end of the development of the activities, it can be concluded that the construction of concepts related to Algebra can be favored by the use of handling materials, however, we emphasize that the development time of activities was a limiting factor, since the theme requires a greater number of activities and study time so that students can (re) construct the concepts related to this area of Mathematics.
