Resumo: This paper aims to establish a confrontation between two conceptions of the so-called musical material and its development in the music history, namely, those of Theodor Adorno and Jean-François Lyotard. The “material trend”, due to a process of increasing rationalization, especially from Schoenberg’s dodecaphonism and serialists incursions, converges to a process of desensitization and erasure of subjective expressiveness, culminating in its fetishism, that is, as if the material took on a life of its own. However, something seems to escape this desensitization: the act, the intensity, the non-connected, which are not reduced to a dialectic of the material.

A “tendência de material”, devido a um processo de racionalização crescente, sobretudo a partir do dodecafonismo de Schoenberg e as incursões serialistas, conflui para um processo de dessensibilização e apagamento da expressividade subjetiva, culminando em seu fetichismo, ou seja, como se o material ganhasse vida própria.
