Performances of the past: social drama and the concept of history in Alfonso X’s final years (1272-1284)

This article investigates the concept of history in the works of Alfonso X of Castile (13th century) through the performative display (retraer) of his stories at the courts. Such performances bring Estoria de España and General Estoria closer to troubadour practices, as well as to the legal universe that regulate them in the Segunda Partida. At a theoretical level, this analysis enables a dialogue between Conceptual History and Performance Studies; such debate converges with the centrality of bodily practices for the agency of concepts in material life, which indicates: 1) the political emergence of the present in the past (via parallels) and of the past in the present (via performances); 2) a tension between history and poetry in the composition of a true discourse. Finally, I stress the historically saturated nature of the concept of retraer, along with the mobilization of its meanings to understand the connections between social crisis and semantic change on Alfonso X’s concept of History.
