The eternal (in)disciplinary movements between History and International Relations: the importance of historical thought

This article analyzes the historiographic and theoretical-methodological foundations of the (in)disciplinary relationship between History and International Relations (IR). The main movements of distance and approach between History and IR are identified via historiographic interpretation. The article has two fundamental objectives. The first is to demonstrate that, although History holds central importance in IR theoretical imagination as a discipline, its importance was variable and reflected the different political and scientific moments of the field’s birth, autonomy, and maturity. The second is to problematize the bridges and boundaries between the two fields, underlining the importance of historical thought to analyze international relations. The article’s central argument is that the return of historical thought to the IR discipline mitigates the a-historical and a-social limitations of neopositivism’s dominance and sophisticates the reflexive understanding of the study of international relations.
