Departamento de Filosofia, Instituto de Filosofia, Artes e Cultura, Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto.Em um artigo publicado na década de 70, o filósofo australiano Peter Singer defende que temos a obrigação moral de ajudar os menos favorecidos. O argumento apresentado por Singer pode ser interpretado da seguinte forma: o sofrimento e a morte decorrentes da falta de comida, assistência médica e moradia são ruins; se podemos evitar que essas coisas ruins aconteçam, sem que para isso seja preciso sacrificar coisa alguma de importância comparável, então devemos fazê-lo; se não fizermos estamos a agir mal. Fortemente influenciado por esse argumento um grupo de jovens, composto em sua grande maioria por universitários americanos e britânicos, iniciou um movimento conhecido como Altruísmo Eficaz. O movimento baseiase em uma ideia simples; devemos, por meio da racionalidade, tentar reduzir o sofrimento no mundo. O objetivo desta pesquisa é avaliar a cogência argumentativa do Altruísmo Eficaz e seus desdobramentos ao considerar que a racionalidade é um instrumento mais eficaz do que a empatia quando queremos fazer do mundo um lugar melhor.In an article published in the 1970s, the Australian philosopher Peter Singer argues that we have a moral obligation to help the less fortunate; the argument presented by Singer can be interpreted as follows: Suffering and death resulting from lack of food, medical care, and housing are bad; if we can prevent these bad things from happening, without sacrificing anything of comparable importance, then we must do so; if we do not we are acting badly. Strongly influenced by this argument, a group of young people composed mostly of American and British university students initiated a movement known as Effective Altruism. The movement is based on a simple idea; through rationality, we must try to reduce suffering in the world.
