Possui como objeto a Escola Normal de Ouro Preto, desde o ato de sua criação em 1835, até o final do período imperial, em 1889. Estabelece como objetivo compreender, através da análise da bibliografia e documentação referente à Escola Normal e a instrução pública mineira no recorte indicado, o processo de implantação e funcionamento da referida instituição formadora no contexto imperial, focalizando principalmente seus momentos de crise e reestruturação ao longo do século XIX e ao seu funcionamento a partir da década de 1870. Pela análise das fontes utilizadas nesta investigação foi possível entender que, assim como as outras instituições de formação implantadas na primeira metade do século XIX no Brasil, a de Ouro Preto também passou por uma série de dificuldades para se estabelecer, fechando suas portas por duas vezes, no recorte da investigação. Muitos são os motivos atribuídos ao fechamento da Escola Normal em suas duas primeiras fases, entre eles, é possível destacar a falta de professores qualificados para regê-la, a baixa procura do público em frequentá-la, a falta de aplicabilidade prática dos métodos ministrados em seu interior, e a alegada escassez de recursos financeiros do governo provincial para mantê-la. Porém, na década de 1870 presencia-se o restabelecimento definitivo da Escola Normal de Ouro Preto no contexto do século XIX. Pela análise das fontes constatou-se que esta passou a funcionar com relativa estabilidade na sua terceira fase, percebeu-se também a inversão de gênero no corpo discente da instituição a partir de 1872, e o destaque de seus docentes no cenário intelectual mineiro da época. Ainda assim, a Escola não deixou de enfrentar muitas dificuldades neste contexto, sobretudo de ordem estrutural e no que tange ao cumprimento pleno de seu principal objetivo: formar docentes para atuarem no magistério primário público mineiro. Entretanto, apesar dos problemas e dos períodos de instabilidades vividos ao longo do século XIX, não é possível deixar de pontuar a relevância e centralidade da Escola Normal de Ouro Preto neste contexto, sendo esta a primeira instituição mineira a tentar fornecer - mesmo que muitas vezes com pouco sucesso e passando por muitas dificuldades - uma formação específica para os professores primários mineiros, em um período em que ainda se construía a ideia da necessidade da formação e da profissionalização docente em Minas Gerais e também no Brasil.This Master's Thesis is a part of the history studies about School Institutions and Teachers Training. The focus of this study is the Normal School of Ouro Preto city, from the time of its creation in 1835 until the end of the imperial period in 1889. The purpose is to understand through the analysis of literature and documentation about Normal School and the Public Education in Minas Gerais in the indicated period; the implementation process and functioning of that educational institution in the imperial context, particularly focusing on moments of crisis and restructuring throughout the nineteenth century and their operations from the decade of 1870. By the analysis of the documents used as sources for this research, was possible to understand that as well as other training institutions established in the first half of the nineteenth century in Brazil, the Ouro Preto’s Normal School also went through a lot of difficulties to establish itself, as we can see by the two times that this establishment close its doors. Many are the reasons attributed to the shutdown of the Normal School in its first two phases, between them, it is possible to highlight the lack of qualified teachers to rule it, low demand of teachers to attend it, the lack of practical applicability of the given methods in its interior and the alleged lack of financial resources by the provincial government to keep it. But in the 1870 was notable the definitive restoration of Ouro Preto’s Normal School in the context of the nineteenth century. Through the analysis of the documents we found out that the Normal School was functioning with relative stability in its third phase, also realized that from 1872 was a change in the gender of the students that frequent the institution, and the stand out of their teachers in the intellectual scene of Minas Gerais. Still, the school has continued to face many difficulties in this context, particularly structural and with respect to full compliance with its primary objective: to train teachers to work in the public system of primary education in Minas Gerais. However, despite these problems and periods of instability experienced throughout the nineteenth century, we cannot fail to point the relevance and centrality of Ouro Preto Normal School in this context, as it was the first institution of Minas Gerais that try to provide - even if often without success and going through many difficulties - specific training for primary school teachers in Minas Gerais in a period which was still building the idea of the need for teacher’s training and professionalization in Minas Gerais and Brazil.Autorização concedida ao Repositório Institucional da UFOP pelo(a) autor(a) em 24/05/2016 com as seguintes condições: disponível sob Licença Creative Commons 4.0 que permite copiar, distribuir e transmitir o trabalho desde que sejam citados o autor e o licenciante.
