Resumo: From the 15th century European nations have intensified their maritime journeys, sailing through hitherto unknown seas with the most diverse goals. The main motivation was opening trade routes to the East, particularly India and China, as an alternative to the so-called silk routes used since Antiquity. On the way they were finding lands with important natural resources, and unknown peoples. On behalf of the monarchs sponsoring the voyages, they took possession of the new lands. It is the beginning of the Era of Conquest and Colonialism.

A maior motivação era abrir rotas comerciais para o Oriente, particularmente a Índia e a China, como alternativa às chamadas rotas da seda utilizadas desde a Antiguidade. No caminho foram encontrando terras, com recursos naturais importantes, e povos desconhecidos. Em nome dos monarcas patrocinadores das viagens, tomaram posse das novas terras.
