Resumo: We start from the idea that the mythical construction of soccer as a representation of the Brazilian nation emphasized that the Brazilian players had a distinct talent. Formulated in 1930’s, where a new national identity was built, features such as improvisation and individuality were demarcated as synonyms of “brazilianness”. For us, this conjuncture would designate little attention to the coach of the Brazilian team, who would organize the team to a collective game. In this paper, we will investigate the narratives of three newspapers (Jornal do Brasil, O Globo and Folha da Manhã) in the next day of the first national winning of the World Cup in 1958. Our focus will be to answer two questions: a) if the national identity architected in 1930’s was remodeled after the title and b) if the coach was exalted in the newspaper narratives of this triumph.

Para nós, esta conjuntura designaria pouco destaque ao treinador da seleção brasileira, que organizaria a equipe para um jogo coletivo. Neste sentido, vamos investigar as narrativas de três jornais (Jornal do Brasil, O Globo e Folha da Manhã) no dia seguinte a primeira conquista nacional de uma Copa do Mundo, em 1958.
