The process of urbanization brings with it various problems for the cities. The use and occupation of the soil without urban planning trigger problems, mainly in environmental issues and Socio-spatial. Faced with this question, and the search for solutions to such problems is proposed the construction of sustainable cities, these cities are able to promote development through sustainability. The city of João Pessoa has a vast area and still preserves a considerable part of the Atlantic forest biome, also went through a process of intense urbanization in recent years. This has caused problems as the urban density, pollution of rivers, land speculation, destroying green areas, subnormal agglomerations in areas of risk, segregation socio-spatial, among others. To solve or minimize these problems Public policy and the articulation between the local actors are able to transform João Pessoa into a sustainable city, promoting the improvement of the quality of life for the whole population. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the existence of some environmental public policies in the city of João Pessoa, which allow the promotion of a sustainable city and identify the perception of organized society in and municipal public management about environmental issues. Were chosen three important policies, the master plan for 2009, the plan for the conservation of the Atlantic forest and the Municipal System of protected areas and for identification of opinion about environmental issues questionnaires were applied to public managers and for the organized society, moreover, were made policy proposals for the promotion of sustainable development. The City despite having a legal apparatus lacks in the quality of execution, as well as the improvement in the relationship between civil society and the public authorities and the public authorities with itself agencies in this way It’s possible for the city to move towards sustainable development.
