A prostituição feminina e associação de prostitutas da Paraíba: movimento social, luta política e reivindicação de direitos

This dissertation approaches feminine prostitution in the city of João Pessoa and its legal and social implications. The former are considered where legal regulation of the activity is concerned, and the latter where the associative movement and the founding of the Prostitute s Association of the State of Paraíba - Brazil (APROS-PB Associação de Prostitutas da Paraíba). The research stemmed from the author s involvement in a Research and Study Group on Gender and Law at UFPB (the NEPGED), participation in the Institutional Scientific Initiation Project with a scholarship (PIBIC) and working at the NGO Dignitatis, which provides assistance in Human Rights issues and was responsible for making the first contact with the APROS-PB possible. Thus, it was a socio-legal work, which included field and bibliographical research. In its practical aspect, the research focused on maintaining contact with the prostitutes daily life and their associative movement, collecting data by means of interviews. Data from legal processes which occurred in Paraíba s State Court of Law were also collected. The theoretical aspect, on the other hand, was covered by bibliographical research. On its structure, the work was divided into three chapters. The first included theoretical and legal aspects, dealing with subjects such as prostitute s rights and the legal regulation of their activity. The second chapter brings the methodology chosen and its implications and links with the researched group. The third chapter deals with the APROS-PB and its relation to feminine prostitution in the State of Paraíba. This research aimed at fighting prejudices that affect prostitutes, especially the ones which put them in the condition of mere victims, and advocates for them to be viewed as protagonists of their lives. In this sense, the adopted position was against the aforementioned denial and in favour of recognizing their activity with all the legal consequences required.
