Resumo: | The present research aimed at investigating the current marching bands project in the municipality of João Pessoa, which is linked to the Education and Culture Department and implemented through the municipal law No. 7.131, October 5, 1992. The project entitled "Educating children through music" has begun its activities at 11 public schools. In 2017, during data collection, the project was running in 93 out of 96 public schools, having the teaching of music as an extracurricular activtiy in all of them, mainly through the marching bands. As a broad objective, in order to understand the educational role of this project and its educational and musical conceptions which guides the practice of the marching bands within schools, a quantitative survey was carried out on the basis of questionnaires applied to 70 conductors. As complementary data, semi-structured interviews with the founder of the project, the general and pedagogical coordinators, who were in charge in 2017, were also executed so as to understand the structure of the project and how it is operated. To this means, the Survey Monkey platform was useful since it allowed questionnaire tabulation and the obtaining of a statistical approach from the gathered data, thus generating tables and graphics. The collected data was analyzed and interpreted both quantitavely and qualitatively in order to better comprehend the results. A cross-sectional analysis was performed, in the final analysis, by using the gathered data from the questionnaires with those obtained from the interview with the coordinators as well as with those from the documentary and bibliographical material used throughout the research. In this regard, we discussed the conceptions on instrument teaching and the teacher-student relationship, some definitions of what a “band” is, and presented a brief historical course of the bands in the country, their functions and how the teaching-learning process is performed in these musical groups. Through data analysis, it was possible to observe that not only the formation of most conductors but also the other musical activities performed are linked to instrumental performance, which reflects into the teaching process and, therefore, to the prevalence of marching bands tradition. Once the teaching is focused on results, problems are commonplace, ranging from the selection of students to their effective musical development. In conclusion, the conceptions which guide the project are based upon the traditional approach to music teaching, aiming at musical performance and bands presentation. |
