Despite several debates on income inequality, there is no consensus on how this inequality affects economic growth. Recent works, such as that by Aiyar e Ebeke (2020), establish that this relationship between inequality and growth is governed by the level of equal opportunities, which can be measured by the degree of intergenerational income mobility. Thus, this paper estimates the degree of intergenerational income mobility for the Brazilian population using PNAD data from 1989 and 2014, allowing comparisons with previous works and verifying how mobility varied over time. The main results indicate a mobility degree of 0.56 (between son and father), 0.60 (between daughter and father), 0.48 (between son and mother) and 0.27 (between daughter and mother). This represents a lower mobility than that of developed countries, but greater than that of other Latin American countries, which suggests that Brazil may be on the right path in the search for equality of opportunities, if compared to its Latin American neighbors.
