João Alfredo and Paulo Freire: Popular modernization in an oligarchic university (1962-1964)

This study aims to analyze the pillars of Paulo Freire’s political action  at the Universidade do Recife (UR), currently known as Universidade Fede-ral de Pernambuco (UFPE), during the period in which João Alfredo was its rector,  which led him to the beginning of his pedagogical theoretical framework. In the course of this study, the way Paulo Freire’s discourse re-verberated at the university, enabling changes in the rules and standards of the institution,  is characterized. Therefore, a study was made associating Freire’s theoretical development and its ability to spread throughout the institutional field, linked to the very serious social-political-educational context with regard to housing and education. Discussions in society penetrated the University. The analysis focused on João Alfredo’s rise as rector of the UR and Freire’s admission in the institution. In this regard, institutional documents such as systematized minutes of the University Council, Statute, and UR Rules of Procedure were analyzed. These and other sources showed not only the consolidation of this political and, to a certain extent, personal bonding, but also propiciated the development, by Freire, of strategies outside of the institution’s rationale - through, for example, the 2 years he had worked at the Serviço de Extensão Cultural  (SEC).
