Being black in media representations: a debate on identity constructions

Resumo: This paper examines, based on the concept of representation and on discourse analysis, how the racial identities of individuals are constructed by cultural processes of meaning constructions. In this study, we define representation as a cultural construction that directly interferes in individual and collective identities, telling us who we are in the world. In this sense, we highlight how the media acts in the lives of individuals by “teaching” ways of being which are based on racist values. It is in this sense that we identify the performance of media in exalting, for example, racial stereotypes that represent the “other” with negative characteristics.

Compreendemos, neste estudo, a representação como uma construção cultural que interfere diretamente nas identidades individuais e coletivas, dizendo-nos quem somos no mundo. Nesse sentido, destacamos como as mídias atuam na vida dos sujeitos ao “ensinar” modos de ser que tomam como base valores racistas. É nesse sentido que identificamos a atuação das mídias na exaltação, por exemplo, de estereótipos raciais que representam o “outro” com características negativas.
