Unveiling truths and underlining beauties: a freirean perspective for literature and literary theory

Resumo: Based on a reconstitution of the intellectual context of Paulo Freire’s work, this article aims to suggest a Freirean perspective for literature and literary theory, even though Paulo Freire does not deal specifically with literature in his work. To this end, based mainly on texts written by Paulo Freire (1959; 1967; 1978 [1968]; 1981 [1975]; 1989 [1981]; 2001 [1993]; 1996), and considering above all his reflections on Brazilian reality and education, as well as language, this paper points out possibilities of relations with literature and literary theory, especially with Karl Vossler’s aesthetic criticism or stylistics tradition, referenced by Freire, aiming at a teaching of literature based on theory, as opposed to the danger of pragmatism aligned with neoliberal discourse.
