Resumo: | The downtown undergoes constant transformations from time to time. Almost in a cyclical process throughout the history of cities, the downtown receives new projects. Whether under the justification of resuming its symbolic value, or to update its infrastructure, or to attract new economic investments, there is a consensus between public and private agents on the idea of intervening in the downtown. This article presents the case of the city of Presidente Prudente/SP, which received new projects for its downtown in the 2010s. The discussion revolves around the spatial ambience created by these new projects, compared to the ambience of previous projects. How are they representative of a process of “abandonment” or “deterioration” of the center? It is concluded that the idea of abandoning these spaces is only partial and their deterioration is only relative. Instead of abandoning spaces, there was an abandonment of the old model of local society, implying the need and convenience of thinking about new projects for the downtown. |
