Resumo: The history of women, young people, children, family has been made ... One would expect that we would have an elaborate history of old age. But it is not what happens. In the primary documents produced in the past, the old are generally incorporated into the group of adults, and few historians have prepared to collect the scattered information to construct a narrative of old age. Simone de Beauvoir's classic (1990), originally edited in 1970, remains the leading systematic and diachronic research on senescence. This article discusses the representation of old age in history and literature, commenting on texts by different authors such as Simone de Beauvoir, Gilberto Freyre, Edgar Morin, Samuel Beckett, Nancy Huston and J.M Coetzee.
