Resumo: The legend of King Arthur mainly corresponds to a dual organization, and describes the opposition between two magic characters as a key aspect of the narrative: Merlin, the benevolent sorcerer who guides and helps kings, and Morgan le Fay, an evil witch eager for power. Even though this gendered and ethical opposition finds its roots in a medieval and literary tradition, the antagonism between Merlin and Morgan appears to be a modern creation, widely generalized by Arthurian films and TV series. This paper follows a diachronic perspective to study the construction of Merlin and Morgan as an antithetic couple, from their first appearance in French and English medieval literature of the 12th century to the most recent film and TV productions, including Thorpe’s Knights of the Round Table (1953), Disney’s The Sword in the Stone (1963), Boorman’s Excalibur (1981), the French TV series Kaamelott, the BBC’s Merlin and Starz’s Camelot.

Bien qu’ancrée dans la tradition littéraire médiévale, cette répartition genrée des personnages entre le Bien et le Mal constitue une création du XXe siècle, largement développée par le cinéma et la télévision. Cet article propose un regard diachronique sur la construction de ce couple antithétique, en étudiant l’évolution de ces deux figures essentielles de la légende arthurienne et leurs rapports depuis leur apparition au XIIe siècle, dans les œuvres françaises et anglaises, jusqu’aux productions cinématographiques et télévisuelles majeures de la culture populaire : Les Chevaliers de la Table ronde (1953), Merlin l’Enchanteur (1963), Excalibur (1981), mais aussi les séries télévisées Kaamelott, Merlin et Camelot.A lenda do Rei Artur, amplamente construída sobre uma lógica dual e maniqueísta, opõe duas figuras de bruxos que contribuem para a renovação constante da narração: Merlin, o mago conselheiro dos soberanos, e a fada Morgana, bruxa maléfica e ávida por poder. Embora ancorada na tradição literária medieval, essa repartição de gênero das personagens entre o Bem e o Mal constitui uma criação do século XX, largamente desenvolvida pelo cinema e pela televisão.
