Esses sentimentos elevam a evasão dos pacientes às consultas e ou causam retardo pela procura ao atendimento odontológico, o que tende a promover uma piora da condição bucal com potencialidade de influenciar na qualidade de vida dos indivíduos. Frente ao exposto o presente estudo teve o propósito de avaliar o nível de MD e ATO e investigar se a ocorrência destes sentimentos tem impacto sobre a condição periodontal com reflexo na autopercepção de qualidade de vida de usuários de serviços odontológicos. Um estudo observacional foi realizado, no período de julho a outubro de 2016, com amostra censitária. Determinou-se os níveis de MD e ATO, por meio do uso dos questionários MDAS e Gatchel; além disso foram obtidos dados da condição periodontal (PMG, PS, NIC, SS) e investigou-se o impacto dessa condição sobre a percepção de qualidade de vida, usando o questionário OHIP-14. Coletou-se ainda dados socioeconômicos e histórico de experiências odontológicas traumáticas prévias (EOTP). Participaram 287 sujeitos, com média de idade de 44,4 ± 15,4 anos, sendo 71,4% do gênero feminino. Foram considerados muito ansiosos ou ansiosos 23,3% dos participantes e 42,9% apresentaram medo moderado ou extremo. EOTP foram significativas em relação ao MD e ATO (p<0,05). O gênero feminino e a escolaridade baixa mostraram associação estatisticamente significante em relação a ansiedade (p<0,05). A percepção da condição bucal impactar negativamente na qualidade de vida foi prevalente em 38,3% dos sujeitos, sendo significativamente associada a menor renda (p<0,05), mas sem diferença significativa com a condição periodontal (p>0,05). Conclui-se que o nível moderado e alto de ansiedade e medo ao atendimento odontológico foi observado em parcela expressiva dos entrevistados, sendo o gênero feminino e com menor escolaridade mais suscetíveis à ansiedade. Indivíduos com experiência traumática prévia também estão mais relacionados a altos níveis de medo e ansiedade. O medo e a ansiedade não influenciaram na condição periodontal, e essa por sua vez não influenciou na qualidade de vida dos participantes.Dental Fear (DF) and dental anxiety (DA) are complications for the patient and dental care provider. These feelings increase the patients' avoidance of consultations and cause delay in the search for dental care, which tends to promote an improvement of the oral condition with the potential to influence the quality of life of individuals. In view of the above, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the level of DF and DA and investigate an occurrence of these feelings about the periodontal condition with a reflection on the self-perception of quality of life of users of dental services. An observational study was carried out, in the period of July 2016, with a census sample. The levels of DF and DA were determined for the means of using the MDAS and Gatchel questionnaires; (PMG, PS, NIC, SS) and to investigate the question about the perception of quality of life using the OHIP-14 questionnaire. Socioeconomic data and history of previous traumatic dental experiences (PTDE) were also collected. A total of 287 subjects participated, with a mean age of 44.4 ± 15.4 years, with 71.4% being female. 23.3% of the participants were considered very anxious or anxious and 42.9% presented moderate or extreme fear. PTDE were significant in relation to DF and DA (p<0.05). The female gender and low schooling showed a statistically significant association with anxiety (p<0.05). The perception of the oral condition negatively impacting quality of life was prevalent in 38.3% of the subjects, being significantly associated with lower income (p<0.05), but without significant difference with the periodontal condition (p>0.05). It was concluded that the moderate and high level of anxiety and fear of dental care was observed in an expressive portion of the interviewees, with the female gender and lower educational level being more susceptible to anxiety. Individuals with previous traumatic experience are also more related to high levels of fear and anxiety.
