Esse termo designa as locomotivas, os trens e as ferrovias. Sua implantação e operação representam a inserção do primeiro modo de transporte derivado de uma tecnologia propriamente industrial naquele espaço urbano. A presença das maxambombas na cidade do Recife é o tema dessa dissertação, a qual está estruturada como três ensaios mais um capítulo reservado para a exposição de vivências do pesquisador com a metrópole do tempo presente e as opçõesteórico-metodológicas da pesquisa. O primeiro ensaio tem a proposta de articular um debate historiográfico sobre os sentidos da modernidade para a história do Recife, tendo como especificidade a introdução da tecnologia ferroviária e do sistemade trilhos urbanos. Sobre este último focamos a análise em dois elementos: a forma de sua concepção, a população e os territórios afetados. Apresentamos as duas ferrovias de curta distância na capital da província pernambucana, uma voltada para o deslocamento entre o núcleo populacional mais denso e os povoados dos arredores, nos quais predominava a paisagem rural; e outra para os sopés da vizinha cidade de Olinda. O segundo trata de estudo de caso acerca da construção narrativa que estabeleceu uma representação histórica da Maxambomba. Analisamos as crônicas históricas de Mário Sette escritas entre as décadas de 1930 e 1940, para compreensão do papel das ferrovias dentro de uma narrativa que busca edificar uma memória e cingir a história do Recife entre o Moderno e o Antigo. E o terceiro contém uma análise sobre aspectos daformulação de um lugar de memória ligado à presença desses trens, em que analisamoso monumento histórico da antiga estação dos trilhos urbanos, localizada em um luxuoso subúrbio da açucarocracia pernambucana. Como conclusões das informações elaboradas, aponta-se que presença das maxambombas é elemento adjacente ao projeto de urbanização novecentista, que não reconheceu a presença dos despossuídos noscaminhos rasgados pelo progresso, em nome da eficiência, do comércio e do hedonismode matiz burguesa; identificamos como a nostalgia, como recurso estético, e a presença da melancolia, como atitude pública, serviram à transmissão de certa experiência com esse aparato, a partir de narrativas literárias e históricas; evidenciamos o caráter meramente alegórico do lugar de memória que se confundiu com a temporalidadefabricada pelos cronistas, e reflete antigos valores rurais da elite provincial.Maxambombas is the term that we refer, popularly, to the urban railroads used inthe city of Recife between 1867 e 1920. The term designates locomotives, trains and railways. Its implantation and operation represents the insertion of the first mode of transport derivative of industrial technology in that urban space. The maxambombas presence in the city of Recife is the theme of this dissertation, which is structured as three essays plus a chapter reserved for exposing the researcher's experiences with the metropolis of present time and the theoretical-methodological options of the research. The first essay proposes to articulate a historiographical debate on the meanings of modernity for the history of Recife, having as specificity the introduction of railway technology and the urban rail system. On the latter, we focus the analysis on two elements: the form of its conception, the population and the affected territories. Two short-distance railroads were implemented, one for moving between the densest population nucleus and the surrounding villages, in which the rural landscape predominated; and another to the foothills of the neighboring city of Olinda. The secondis a case study about the narrative construction that established a historicalrepresentation of Maxambomba. We analyze the historical chronicles of Mário Sette written between the 1930s and 1940s, in order to understand the role of the railroads within a narrative that seeks to build a memory and encircle the history of Recife between the Modern and the Ancient. And the third contains an analysis of aspects of the formulation of a place of memory linked to the presence of these trains, in which weanalyze the historic monument of the old urban rail station, located in a luxurious suburb of Pernambuco's aristocratic sugarcane society. As conclusions of the information elaborated, it is pointed out that the presence of maxambombas is anadjacent element to the nineteenth century urbanization project, which did not recognizethe presence of the dispossessed in the paths torn by progress, in the name of efficiency, commerce and bourgeois hue hedonism; we identified how nostalgia, as an aesthetic resource, and the presence of melancholy, as a public attitude, served to transmit a certain experience with this apparatus, based on literary and historical narratives;
