No Brasil os idosos já representam quase 11% da população total do país, segundo último censo demográfico. Por sua vez, apesar de dispositivos como o Estatuto do Idoso e a Política Nacional de Saúde da Pessoa Idosa a atenção à saúde desse grupo etário ainda é incipiente e merece ser discutida. O presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar a atuação do médico e do enfermeiro na atenção ao idoso na Estratégia Saúde da Família, no Distrito Sanitário VI, da cidade do Recife-PE. Tratou-se de um estudo descritivo-exploratório, de natureza quantitativa. Participaram 42 médicos e 67 enfermeiros, que responderam a um questionário semiestruturado e autoadministrado. Na análise utilizou-se estatística descritiva e os principais resultados mostraram que os idosos têm mais acesso aos profissionais por demanda espontânea, em decorrência de problemas crônicos, sobretudo, hipertensão e diabetes. A maioria dos médicos realizam nessa atenção atividades educativas e consultas, principalmente, e os enfermeiros atividades educativas e visitas domiciliares. Como dificuldades as duas categorias destacaram a escassez de treinamentos promovidos pelo município em temas relacionados ao envelhecimento, a descontinuidade do cuidado pelo restrito acesso do idoso à atenção especializada e falhas na contrarreferência. Concluiu-se que, embora comprometidos, os profissionais precisam de capacitações específicas referentes ao idoso, cabendo à gestão investir nesse sentido dando condições aos profissionais para planejar ações mais abrangentes que ultrapassem os limites de programas como o HIPERDIA. Ampliar o acesso do idoso à rede de saúde especializada também constitui uma medida fundamental.CAPESAging has been a worldwide phenomenon in the last few decades. In Brazil, elderly population already represents around 11% of the entire population, according to last demographic census. Despite the existence of legal apparatuses like Elderly Statute and Brazilian National Health Policy for Elderly People, the health care to this age group is still incipient and deserves to be discussed. This study aimed at analyzing medical and nursing attending practice to the elderly on Family Health Strategy, in Sanitary District VI, in the city of Recife, Pernambuco. It consisted of a descriptive-exploratory study with quantitative approach. 42 doctors and 67 nurses participated answering a semi-structured and self-administrated questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used in the analysis and the main results showed that aged people have more access to these professionals by spontaneous demand, due to chronic problems, specially, hypertension and diabetes. In this care, most of doctors perform educational activities and consultation, while the nurses perform educational activities and domiciliary services. As difficulties, both categories highlighted shortage of training promoted by the municipality in issues related to aging, discontinuity of care because of restrict access by the elder to specialized attending and failures in counter-reference. It was concluded that, although compromised, professionals need specific training regarding the elderly, and this investment is a responsibility of the city management, to give them conditions for planning broader actions that go beyond the limits of programs such as HIPERDIA.
