Messagem da APAE (1963-1973): educating parents to educate the exceptional

This text deals with the periodical publication Mensagem da APAE (1963-1973) in order to understand and explain, in the relationship between textuality and materiality, the role assigned to the relatives of exceptional people. It is a historical study and Chartier is taken as the main reference. The results indicate that the emphasis on the family as an educational instance for the exceptional endorsed the representation that, at least palliatively, any agents could educate people with disabilities as long as they were sensitized to this task, under the apaean motto of "more love and understanding".  Moreover, between the 1960s and 1970s, the APAEs assumed social and mental hygiene. In the case of the exceptional, this approach was adopted as a strategy to justify the need for assistance and education for the exceptional, not only for its presumed scientific nature, but also for the fact that it was consistent with the conservative morality that underpinned the apaean representations in vogue.
