Resumo: The variable status of the 2nd person singular – Imperative Mood, a fruitful phenomenon in Brazilian Portuguese (PAREDES SILVA et al., 2000; SCHERRE, 2003; 2007; 2012; RUMEU, 2016; 2019; SILVA, 2017; CARVALHO, 2020) is the central theme of this paper. Thus, based on the examination of the letters from the nineteenth and twentieth century (1868-1993) autographed by educated writers from the state of Minas Gerais, we seek to ascertain the effect that the reference to the 2nd person subject (CARDOSO, 2012; DINIZ, 2018) and to the sections of the personal letter genre (SILVA, 2017) may have on the phenomenon. This analysis, guided by the theoretical and methodological assumptions of the Sociolinguistics (LABOV, 1972; ROMAINE, 1982; HERNÁNDEZ-CAMPOY; SCHILLING, 2012), proves this influence in view of the strength of the grammatical tradition (ROCHA LIMA, 2013 [1972]) on the scribes and the presence of Discursive Traditions (KABATEK, 2006) of the textual genre.
