Resumo: A theoretical essay is presented based on a brief narrative review of the most up-to-date literature on the topic of intolerance, whose authors have been concerned with the foreigner issue in the field of philosophy of migration. The objective is to present an analytical reading on the foreigner and foreignness issue, considering xenophobia and glotophobia as two problems of intolerance to alterity and difference, whether marked by the ethnic-racial component that defines racism or its inscription in the language as a foreign subject. The adopted epistemological perspective is that of discourse analysis that takes Foucault's studies as a theoretical-methodological orientation. Some concepts such as foreignness, xenophobia, and glotophobia are presented, adopting the entry foreign as the object of discursive analysis from the Houaiss Dictionary of the Portuguese Language (2001). When analyzing a case of glotophobia against Portuguese-speaking Brazilian and African speakers in Portugal, it is observed that intolerance to a given linguistic variety from the perspective of foreignness is related to other discursive issues, such as discrimination by origin, provenance, ethnic-racial group, cultural expression, and linguistics, which oppose the hostile and the harassed in antagonistic discursive formations
