Resumo: | The Portuguese Language was used as an instrument of tiering, silencing and isolation of African languages, today known as Angolan national languages. This article articulates a brief historic route for purposes of analysis of the resistant presence of national languages in Angolan territory against a colonial policy that aimed at erasing African culture through assimilation. This was legitimized through the Native Statute and had the premise of introduction of European customs to Westernize the Angolan community. In this panorama, besides acts of linguistic racism, the resistences that enabled the survival of some African languages are highlighted, as well as the ever-changing power relationships which made the Portuguese language, colonial instrument, to be called Angolan Portuguese. |
