Resumo: Getting old is one of the biggest challenges of public health nowadays, because the raise of life expectation is causing a bigger probability in the development of chronic diseases and disability. The goal of this research was to investigate the level of independence in daily life activities and daily family routine among elderly people. The research was carried out among elderly people who take part in a kind of elderly center in Maringá / Paraná State, Brazil, by means of a semi-structured interview as well as application of Kart’s and Lawton’s scales. The results showed high indices of independence to basic daily activities, and dependence to instrumental activities, such as household tasks or laundry. It was concluded that it is important for the elders’ welfare to attend an Elderly Centre, specially when the stimulus to the development of functional activities is concerned, but it seems there is not any familiar interaction or shared family moments during the period that elderly people stay at home.

O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar o grau de independência para atividades de vida diária e a convivência familiar de idosos. Os dados foram coletados junto a idosos freqüentadores de um centro dia na cidade de Maringá/PR, por meio de entrevista semi-estruturada e aplicação das escalas de Katz e Lawton. Os resultados revelaram elevados índices de independência para atividades básicas de vida diária e dependência para atividades instrumentais, como realização de tarefas domésticas e lavar roupas. Conclui-se que freqüentar um centro dia constitui um recurso importante para o bem estar dos idosos, especialmente em função do estimulo ao desenvolvimento de atividades funcionais, mas parece não haver interação familiar e momentos de convivência no período que permanecem em casa.El envejecimiento poblacional es uno de los mayores desafíos de la salud pública contemporánea, pues el aumento de la expectativa de vida produce también una gran probabilidad de ocurrencia de enfermedades crónicas y desarrollo de incapacidades. El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar el grado de independencia para las actividades de la vida diaria y la convivencia familiar de los ancianos. Los datos fueron colectados junto a los ancianos frecuentadores de un "centro día" en la ciudad de Maringá/PR, por medio de una entrevista semi-estructurada y aplicación de las escalas de Kartz y Lawton. Los resultados revelan elevados índices de independencia para las actividades básicas de la vida diaria y dependencia para las actividades instrumentales, como realización de los trabajos domésticos y lavar ropas.
