Resumo: Despite the fact that there is already a reasonable consensus about therelevance of the human capital factor on income level and growth rate across countries, the empirical results do not give much support to this idea. Many empirical studiesdo not find a significant and positive relation between the level of human capital, income level or growth rate. It seems that there are two main reasons for the lackof association between human capital and income mentioned above. The first one is that the relationship between them seems to be more complex than suggested bysome endogenous growth models, as the Lucas (1988) and the Uzawa (1965) type. The second is the human capital proxy that is generally used in empirical studies. Thepresent study’s goal is to deal with the second problem by means of a human capitalproxy that incorporates quantitative and qualitative characteristics of this factor ofproduction. The empirical study and data are based on Mankiw, Romer and Weil’s1992 study and it will be used as a standard to be compared with our results.

The empirical study and data are based on Mankiw, Romer and Weil’s1992 study and it will be used as a standard to be compared with our results.
