Defesa: Curitiba, 23/06/2015Inclui referências : f. 40-43;57-60Área de concentração: Produção vegetalResumo: Pimenta pseudocaryophyllus (Gomes) Landrum é uma espécie aromática da família Myrtaceae nativa da região sul do Brasil, promissora para a indústria de óleos essenciais, alimento (condimento) e farmacêutica. Há registros de diversos usos para a espécie na literatura, com destaque na medicina tradicional e na aromatização de aguardente, típica da região litorânea dos estados do Paraná e São Paulo. Pretendeu-se gerar subsídios ecológicos e econômicos ao uso sustentável de Pimenta pseudocaryophyllus, contribuindo na elaboração de um plano de manejo extrativista sustentável para a espécie. No primeiro capítulo que compõe a dissertação, avaliou-se a evolução histórica do processo de exploração do recurso pela comunidade da Barra do Ararapira, especialmente no que concerne à atividade da Associação das Mulheres Produtoras de Cataia, a partir de entrevistas semiestruturadas realizadas com os extratores. Levantaram-se, ainda, informações a cerca da cadeia de valor do recurso e suas implicações para a sustentabilidade da prática. No segundo capítulo, analisou-se a demografia da espécie em três áreas de 0,25 ha com diferentes históricos de atividade extrativista, localizadas em remanescente de Floresta Ombrófila Densa. O extrativismo de cataia realizado pela comunidade da Barra do Ararapira apresenta várias características que determinam alto potencial de sustentabilidade, entre elas, o apoio institucional do Instituto Chico Mendes de Biodiversidade e Serviço Florestal Brasileiro (UR Sul) e a estrutura comunitária fortalecida e apoiada para uso coletivo do recurso. Em relação à cadeia de valor do produto, evidenciou-se a necessidade de adoção de medidas no sentido de aprimorar o processo produtivo. Recomenda-se um melhor planejamento da coleta das folhas e a venda exclusiva da aguardente aromatizada. Visando a obtenção de certificação de origem da bebida aromatizada recomenda-se o uso de uma aguardente de melhor qualidade, assim como a efetiva aplicação de normas técnicas de higiene na manipulação do recurso. O estudo da demografia de P. pseudocaryophyllus em três áreas submetidas a diferentes históricos extrativistas revelou possível efeito sobre a estrutura etária destas populações frente à prática. A área sem registro de atividade extrativista apresentou a maior densidade de indivíduos em estádio inicial de desenvolvimento, sendo a única das três áreas a apresentar padrão de distribuição dos estádios de crescimento em "J invertido", geralmente associado à regeneração contínua das espécies. As outras duas áreas apresentaram expressiva redução do componente inicial. Aparentemente, a manutenção das populações de P. pseudocaryophyllus submetidas ao extrativismo está se dando principalmente por mecanismos de reprodução vegetativa, o que aponta para a necessidade de desenvolvimento de estratégias para a conservação genética da espécie. Frente à potencialidade de efeitos adicionais em outros níveis não abordados neste estudo, sugerem-se estudos complementares focalizando a resposta individual a distintas intensidades de poda e o monitoramento fenológico das populações. There are several records of uses to P. pseudocaryophyllus on the literature, especially in traditional medicine and in the brandy aromatization, typical technique of the coastal region of Paraná and São Paulo. Aiming to generate ecological and economic basis for sustainable use of Pimenta pseudocaryophyllus, are presented research results. The historical development of the resource exploration process by Barra do Ararapira community was evaluated in the first chapter, per semi-structured interviews with extractors, with especially regard to the activity of the Association of Women Producers of Cataia. There was also raised information about the resource value chain and its implications for the sustainability of the practice. In the second chapter, we analyzed the demography of the species in three areas of 0.25 ha with different leaf harvesting history, located in a remaining of Tropical Rainforest. The harvesting activity conducted by Barra do Ararapira community has several features that determine high potential for sustainability, for example, the institutional support of the Instituto Chico Mendes de Biodiversidade and Serviço Florestal Brasileiro and the strengthened community structure for collective use of resource. Regarding the product value chain, was reveled the need to adopt measures to improve the production process. It is recommended a better planning of the leaf harvest and the exclusive sale of flavored brandy. In order to get a certification of origin of flavored brandy is recommended a better quality brandy, as well as the effective application of technical parameters of hygiene. The study of P. pseudocaryophyllus demography in three areas under different harvest history revealed possible effect on the age structure of these populations. The area with no extractive activity showed the highest density of initial stage. This area was the only of the three areas that default the distribution of growth stages in "inverted J", usually associated with continue regeneration of the species. The other two areas showed significant reduction in initial stage. Seemingly, the keeping of the populations of P. pseudocaryophyllus submitted to leaf-harvesting is taking place mainly by vegetative reproduction mechanisms, which points to the need of developing strategies for genetic conservation of the species. Considering the existence of additional effects on levels not analyzed in this study, there are suggest further studies focusing on the individual response to different harvest intensities and phenological monitoring of populations.
