Defesa: Curitiba,04/03/2013Bibliografia: fls. 232-242Resumo: O artista plástico curitibano Nilo Previdi (1913-1982) e suas obras compõem o objeto de estudo desta pesquisa, que apresenta e discute os conceitos de arte moderna e arte engajada, conforme esse debate ocorreu especificamente no período de 1940 ao final de 1960 no contexto de Curitiba. A pesquisa de campo foi realizada a partir da localização e catalogação das obras de Previdi guardadas em acervos públicos e particulares. Esta ação resultou, até o momento, na organização de um conjunto de cerca de 140 obras assinadas e mais de 30 atribuídas a ele, somando-se estudos, desenhos, ilustrações, gravuras e pinturas. As obras de arte são analisadas como documentos históricos, a partir de uma proposta metodológica, que leva o pesquisador a analisar o objeto artístico a partir de fundamentações explicativas, que instigam a pensar sobre as possíveis motivações envolvidas na produção do artista, ou "as intenções do tempo", segundo Baxandall. Soma-se à leitura das obras de arte, a análise do cruzamento de fontes escritas, como os documentos oficiais, em sua maior parte pertencentes ao arquivo do Salão Paranaense de Belas Artes, entre os períodos de 1944/1963, datas que correspondem à primeira e à última aparição do nome de Nilo Previdi no certame. Utiliza-se também, as opiniões do artista publicadas em periódicos, como jornais e revistas, que também noticiaram assuntos relacionados à arte em Curitiba. Além da análise das fontes escritas e visuais, também foram realizadas entrevistas com os contemporâneos do artista - família, amigos, conhecidos e agentes culturais. A partir do cotejamento entre obras, fontes escritas e orais e a bibliografia pertinente aos debates no meio artístico daqueles anos, pretende-se situar o lugar ocupado por Previdi no meio cultural curitibano, marcado pelos embates entre o moderno, o acadêmico e as possibilidades de engajamento do artista naquele momento de efervecência e de aspirações pela modernização da cidade e de sua arte.Abstract: The artist Nile Previdi from Curitiba (1913-1982) and his works are this research's subject, that presents and discusses the concepts of modern art and engaged art, as this debate occurred specifically from1940 until the end of 1960 in the context of Curitiba. The fieldwork was conducted from the pursuit and cataloging Previdi's works into the public and private collections. This action resulted so far in organizing a group of about 140 works signed and more than 30 assigned to it, considering the studies, drawings, illustrations, prints and paintings. The works of art are analyzed as historical documents from a methodology proposition that leads the researcher to analyze the art object from explanatory bases which instigate to think about the possible motivations involved in the artist's material, or "the time's intentions", according to Baxandall. The intersection of written sources analysis adds up to the work of art, such as official documents, most of all from "Fine arts Paranaense Hall" collection, between 1944/1963, the first and last time that Nile Previdi's name appears into the event. It is also resorted the artist's points of view published in periodicals such as newspapers and magazines, which also published problems with art in Curitiba. Besides the visual and written sources analysis, interviews were also conducted with people who lived in the same season that Previdi's - family, friends, acquaintances and cultural agents. From the work's comparison, the written and oral sources as the relevant bibliography related to debates among artists of those years, it is intended to indicate the space occupied by Previdi at the cultural field in Curitiba, marked by clashes between the modern art, academic and engaged art possibilities in a time of the city and its art's modernization willing.242f. : il.
