O país é uma República Islâmica desde 1979, e segue as leis presentes nas fontes sagradas do Islã. Para a população feminina, isso significa uma dificuldade em ocupar certos espaços públicos, e um embate constante sobre o seu lugar na sociedade. Enquanto o Estado e a sociedade esperam que as mulheres sejam femininas e se mantenham no ambiente doméstico, as iranianas lutam para defender seus espaços na academia, na política, no mercado de trabalho, e nos esportes. Nesse cenário, a esfera esportiva se apresenta como um rico lugar para a pesquisa, onde as expectativas de gênero do governo batem de frente com as práticas corporais das atletas. Desta forma, tenho como objetivo deste trabalho compreender as experiências e os significados que as atletas iranianas atribuem ao ser mulher e ao ser atleta em uma arena dominada majoritariamente pelas figuras e discursos masculinos. Tendo tal objetivo em vista, foram realizadas entrevistas on-line semiestruturadas com onze atletas de sete modalidades diferentes, buscando conhecer suas trajetórias no esporte, os possíveis conflitos e negociações que surgiram a partir de suas decisões sobre se tornarem atletas, os sentimentos e prazeres gerados pelos esportes, as dificuldades enfrentadas, sua relação com a religião islâmica, e as mudanças que elas gostariam de ver no futuro do esporte no Irã. A análise das entrevistas demonstrou divergências com relação à importância da religião na vida das atletas, e também algumas diferenças relacionadas às dificuldades enfrentadas por elas ao longo de suas carreiras. Essas divergências eram esperadas, já que as atletas pertencem a diferentes gerações, e possuem diferentes origens geográficas e ideológicas. Foi relevante notar, no entanto, a sororidade e união entre as entrevistadas, que sempre recordavam as adversidades enfrentadas por outras mulheres que conheciam, e exaltavam a importância da igualdade de gênero, da justiça, do respeito às diferentes crenças e opiniões, e da valorização dos esportes no Irã. Todas as atletas frisaram o valor dos esportes para o seu desenvolvimento pessoal, demonstrando o quanto a atividade nunca será apenas um exercício físico, mas sim uma paixão imensurável. Palavras-chave: esporte; gênero; atletas iranianas; Islã.Abstract: This study investigates the correlation between gender and sports in Iran. The country has been an Islamic Republic since 1979, and follows the laws present in the holy sources of Islam. For the female population, this means a difficulty in occupying certain public spaces, and a constant clash over their place in society. While the state and society expect women to be feminine and remain in the domestic environment, Iranian women struggle to assert their places in academia, politics, the job market, and sports. In this scenario, the sports realm presents itself as a rich location for research, where the government's gender expectations clash with the athletes' body practices. Therefore, I aim to understand the experiences and the meanings that Iranian athletes attribute to being a woman and being an athlete in a field dominated mainly by masculine figures and discourses. With this goal in mind, semistructured online interviews were conducted with eleven athletes from seven different disciplines, seeking to learn about their trajectories in the sport, the possible conflicts and negotiations that arose from their decisions about becoming athletes, the feelings and pleasures generated from sports, the difficulties they faced, their relationship with the Islamic religion, and the changes they would like to see in the future of sports in Iran. The analysis of the interviews showed differences regarding the importance of religion in the athletes' lives, and also some differences related to the difficulties faced by them throughout their careers. These divergences were expected, as the athletes belong to different generations, and have different geographic and ideological origins. It was relevant to note, however, the sorority and unity among the interviewees, who always remembered the adversities faced by other women they knew, and exalted the importance of gender equality, justice, respect for different beliefs and opinions, and the valorization of sports in Iran. All the athletes stressed the value of sports for their personal development, demonstrating how the activity will never be just a physical exercise, but an immeasurable passion.
