Para alcançar tal objetivo efetua- se uma abordagem imánente da obra, recorrendo-se aos pressupostos teóricos de Lucien Goldmann quanto ã conceituação de herói. A Introdução traz as justificativas e objetivos propostos. A parte 1 - 0 herói ficcional e a sociedade - reflete sobre as idéias básicas de Goldmann que apoiam teoricamente a análise, assim como se volta para considerações em torno do ideal de emancipação feminina. A parte 2 - Isadora e Judith - investiga o universo familiar da protagonista, seu relacionamento com a mãe, a maneira como foi socializada e os conflitos mais sérios que ocorrem dentro da família. A parte 3 - Ã sombra de Narciso - analisa o mundo afetivo de Isadora com relação aos seus amores e os antagonismos daí decorrentes. A parte 4 - Vida e literatura - desloca o enfoque para o mundo profissional da protagonista e sua relação com a literatura, o mundo das palavras. A parte 5 - Os caminhos da psique - acompanha a experiência de Isadora com a psicanálise, da qual emerge a tensão repressão/ emancipação. Através do estudo assim desenvolvido vem â luz a heroína de romance que, preservando os elementos constituintes apontados por Lucien Goldmann em seu estudo do romance tradicional, revela, na medida em que se apresenta impregnada dos valores e idéias associadas ã luta de emancipação feminina, representante autêntica dos anos 70 da cultura norte-americana.Abstract: The present analysis of the novel Fear of Flying, written by the American novelist Erica Jong, aims at revealing, through the conflicts experienced by the protagonist Isadora, the ideals of feminine emancipation and liberation as an essential element of the structure of the fictional character. In order to achieve this goal, the technique of close reading was used as a working tool. The theoretical propositions of Lucien Goldmann with reference to the basic concept of fictional character were also taken into consideration. The introduction of this study presents the purposes and the justification of the dissertation. Part 1, "The Fictional Hero and Society", concerns the basic aspects of Goldmann's theory which support the analysis. It also examines some of the feminine emancipation, ideals. Part 2, "Isadora and Judith", investigates the family background of the protagonist, her relationship with her mother, the way she was socialized, and the main conflicts which occur within the family. Part 3, "Under Narciso's Shadow", analyses Isadora's emotional feelings towards her lovers and the conflicts which emerge from these relationships. Part 4, "Life and Literature", focuses upon the professional world of the protagonist, the literary world, the world of words. Part 5, "The Paths of the Psyche", follows Isadora's experience with psychoanalysis, from which the tension repression/emancipation emerges. From the study thus developed the heroine of the novel comes to light.
