Situa-se na confluência entre relatos de viagem e memória e, naturalmente, abriga traços de autobiografia e autoficção. Ao descrever suas excursões à cidade de Praga, por meio de uma prosa elegante, Banville resgata aspectos históricos e culturais, faz indagações a respeito da arte, da arquitetura, da própria escrita e das relações humanas que acontecem naquele espaço geográfico. Fragmentação, retratos, instantâneos da cidade tecida por palavras. Este estudo objetiva abordar alguns elementos essenciais na práxis composicional adotada por Banville. A intenção é discutir o texto em sua estreita aproximação com as categorias do espaço, da memória e da intermidiaiidade, especialmente no tocante às fotografias de Josef Sudek, uma vez que a dinâmica textual empregada pelo autor abarca o legível e o visível - a palavra e a imagem. Pretendemos investigar de que maneira a representação da cidade está estritamente imbuída das memórias do autor, seja com referência aos fatos pessoais, seja com relação à rica herança histórico-cultural e ao arcabouço artístico que Praga engloba. Todos esses ângulos permitem que Banville entenda a cidade sob um novo prisma, absorvendo-a e ampliando sua compreensão de mundo e de sua própria identidade.Abstract: The non-fiction text Prague Pictures: Portraits of a City (2003), by the Irish author John Banvillle (1945), with no translation in Brazil, configures a hybrid genre. It lies at the confluence of travel narratives and memoir, and naturally harbours traces of autobiography and autofiction. In describing his excursions into the city of Prague, Banville uses elegant prose to recover historical and cultural aspects and to ask questions about art, architecture, writing and the human relationships that take place in that geographic space. There is fragmentation - portraits, snapshots of the city woven by words. This study aims at addressing some essential elements in the compositional praxis adopted by Banville. The intention is to discuss the text in its close approximation to the categories of space, memory and intermediality, especially in relation to the photographs by Josef Sudek, since the textual dynamics employed by the author embraces the legible and the visible - word and image. We intend to investigate how the representation of the city is strictly imbued with the author's memories, whether with reference to personal facts or to the rich historical-cultural heritage and artistic framework that Prague encompasses.
