The present work aims to show the practice of whaling in the novel wrote by Francisco Xavier Ferreira Marques (between the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century) from a hermeneutical analysis of the story as a historical source. This approach aims to expose faces of the daily life of black people involved in the practice of whaling as well as the most recurrent practices in the labor relations for the service of the Bahia whaling industry. In this work, cultural aspects such as the clash of religions – Catholic and African ones – appear as an unfolding of the mediation of the whaling activity as a determining factor for the establishment of the social structure given in that context. The work relies on the crossing of sources as a method of exposing data and historical phenomena evidenced by the novel of Xavier Marques as well as it throws an effort to understand the political ideology that hovered in the context of intellectual production of the author called "The Arpoador".
