Resumo:	In this article we demonstrate how, at the end of the 19th century, the negation of the African heritage in the process of forming the Brazilian people was evident and could beread in one of the novels written by Francisco Xavier Ferreira Marques, Boto & Cia. This novel was rewritten and published in the 1920s. By rewriting it and reinventing it with the title of O feiticeiro¸ Marques shows us how the republican elites wanted, in an in creasingly intense way, to deny and even eliminate the Afro-Brazilian culture. The emphasisis on how literature was used to describe the ideal of a nation that was Eurocentric who semot to was the ideao freturning to the origin of the Iberian colonizer.

Este romance foi reescrito e publicado nos anos 1920 de modo que, ao reescrevê-lo e reinventá-lo com o título de O feiticeiro¸ Marques nos mostra o quanto as elites republicanas desejavam, de maneira cada vez mais intensa, negar e até mesmo eliminar a cultura afro-brasileira e mesmo a cor negra.
