Resumo: This article explores the reliability of narrators in the cosmic horror tales of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, focusing on the story “Dagon”. We discuss how Lovecraft portrays characters who, after encounters with aliens, verge on madness, narrating their experiences in the first person, which raises questions about the truthfulness of their accounts. Using “Dagon” as a case study, we investigate whether the narrator fits the category of a “mad unreliable narrator”, as classified by Riggan (1981). The article incorporates theories from Lovecraft (2021) on supernatural horror, the concepts of Rigan (1981) and Booth (1983) on unreliable narrators, and the ideas of Todorov (1973) and Roas (2014) on fantastic literature, to analyze the validity and impact of these narratives in horror literature.
