This paper investigates the part of speech traditionally known as “interjections”, by looking into their main phonic, structural, and meaningful properties. Firstly, we show how and why interjections constitute a genuine linguistic object and then we discuss what their main aspects are and what kind of issue they rise to a morphologic and syntactic formalization. Later, we discuss their phonic properties and argue that much of the view that interjections are somehow “phonological anomalous” comes from remarks on orthography rather than on their phonic constituency. Finally, based on Distributed Morphology (HALLE; MARANTZ, 1993, 1994), we prefigure a formal treatment for some of the rised issues and, later, we highlight those remaining open for further research.
