THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MENTAL MODELS OF ENTREPRENEURS AND ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY IN TWO METAL-MECHANIC FIRMS

Resumo: | Besides the competitive structure of the market and other external factors, organizations are also exposed to internal influences. Among these influences, entrepreneurs’ mental models, as a propulsive guide for organizational performance, stands out. For Le Boterf (2003), the mental models can help in the construction of competence in order to facilitate the strategic dynamic of change and innovation. Therefore, the main objective of the study is to identify how the so-called occult elements, such as the mental models, and the entrepreneurs’ competences can contribute to the organizational performance. In order to do so, two case studies have been carried out in companies with similar characteristics, in terms of foundation; by widely using individual interviews, comparing mental models of their entrepreneurs’ and their implications. The results point that there is a large difference between the analyzed entrepreneurs’ models, and such difference can explain why the performances have been so different over the years. Therefore, it is possible to infer that, the entrepreneurs’ mental models, linked to their competences as well as their strategies and available resources influence the organizational performance. |

De entre estas influencias, se destaca la interferencia de los modelos mentales de los emprendedores como guía propulsor del desempeño de las organizaciones. Para Le Boterf (2003), los modelos mentales pueden auxiliar en la construcción de la competencia para facilitar la dinámica estratégica del cambio y de la innovación. De ser así, el objetivo central del trabajo es identificar como los denominados elementos ocultos, como es el caso de los modelos metales y de las competencias de los emprendedores, pueden contribuir al desempeño organizacional. Para tanto, fueron desarrollados dos estudios de caso en empresas con características semejantes en su fundación, con la aplicación de entrevistas individuales en profundidad, comparándose los modelos mentales de sus emprendedores y sus implicaciones. Los resultados evidencian que hay una diferencia destacable en los modelos mentales de los emprendedores analizados y que tal diferencia puede explicar el porqué de desempeños tan diferentes entre las dos empresas a lo largo del tiempo. Es posible inferir, entonces, que los modelos mentales de los emprendedores, interligados a sus competencias, a las estrategias adoptadas y a los recursos disponibles influencian el desempeño organizacional.Além da estrutura competitiva de mercado e demais fatores externos, as organizações também estão expostas às influências internas. Dentre estas influências, destaca-se a interferência dos modelos mentais dos empreendedores como guia propulsor da performance das organizações. Para Le Boterf (2003), os modelos mentais podem auxiliar na construção da competência para facilitar a dinâmica estratégica da mudança e da inovação. Sendo assim, o objetivo central do trabalho é identificar como os denominados elementos ocultos, como é o caso dos modelos metais e das competências dos empreendedores, podem contribuir para o desempenho organizacional. Para tanto, foram desenvolvidos dois estudos de caso em empresas com características semelhantes em sua fundação, com a aplicação de entrevistas individuais em profundidade, comparando-se os modelos mentais de seus empreendedores e suas implicações. Os resultados evidenciam que há uma diferença marcante nos modelos mentais dos empreendedores analisados e que tal diferença pode explicar o porquê de desempenhos tão diferentes entre as duas empresas ao longo do tempo.
