THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN INNOVATION AND ROUTINE: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE

Resumo: Nowadays companies have been innovating in order to survive in the current competitive scenario. Within an innovative environment the routines are mainly perceived as a barrier to be bypassed rather than an element that can facilitate the innovation. The comprehension of the relationship between innovation and routine is the main objective of this work. For tackling the subject we utilize a case study with multiple units of analysis in a company that has promoted innovation practices in a massive way. We have utilized an analytical model based on organizational learning. Based on both, the theoretical background and in the case study’s evidences, it is possible to confirm the antagonism between innovation and routine. However, considering the limits of the case study, we have observed that relationship was in opposition to the Schumpeter’s propositions, once the excessive importance given to innovation process posed some constraints to routines development. Last, we suggest that the balance between routine and innovation can bring some interesting opportunities to organizations.

En un ambiente innovador, la rutina es eventualmente percibida más como barrera a ser vencida que como elemento facilitador de la innovación. Así contextualizado, entender la relación entre innovación y rutina es el objetivo de este trabajo que se valió de una empresa innovadora para un estudio de caso longitudinal con múltiplas unidades de análisis, empleando un modelo basado en el aprendizaje organizacional como instrumental analítico. Con base en los constructos teóricos y en la observación de la realidad, es posible confirmar el antagonismo entre la rutina y la innovación. Sin embargo, dentro de los límites del caso analizado, tal relación ocurrió de forma inversa al indicado por Schumpeter, en la medida en que la excesiva importancia conferida a los procesos de innovación acabó por dificultar el movimiento de la rutina. Al final, se sugiere que un mejor equilibrio entre rutina e innovación puede representar oportunidades interesantes para las organizaciones.As empresas têm recorrido às inovações como forma de sobreviverem no atual contexto competitivo. Em um ambiente inovativo, a rotina é eventualmente percebida mais como barreira a ser vencida do que como elemento facilitador da inovação. Assim contextualizado, entender a relação entre inovação e rotina é o objetivo deste trabalho que se valeu de uma empresa inovadora para um estudo de caso longitudinal com múltiplas unidades de análise, empregando um modelo baseado na aprendizagem organizacional como instrumental analítico. Com base nos construtos teóricos e na observação da realidade, é possível confirmar o antagonismo entre a rotina e a inovação. No entanto, dentro dos limites do caso analisado, tal relação ocorreu de forma reversa ao indicado por Schumpeter, na medida em que a excessiva importância conferida aos processos de inovação acabou por dificultar o andamento da rotina.
