THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN INNOVATION AND ROUTINE: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE

Nowadays companies have been innovating in order to survive in the current competitive scenario. Within an innovative environment the routines are mainly perceived as a barrier to be bypassed rather than an element that can facilitate the innovation. The comprehension of the relationship between innovation and routine is the main objective of this work. For tackling the subject we utilize a case study with multiple units of analysis in a company that has promoted innovation practices in a massive way. We have utilized an analytical model based on organizational learning. Based on both, the theoretical background and in the case study’s evidences, it is possible to confirm the antagonism between innovation and routine. However, considering the limits of the case study, we have observed that relationship was in opposition to the Schumpeter’s propositions, once the excessive importance given to innovation process posed some constraints to routines development. Last, we suggest that the balance between routine and innovation can bring some interesting opportunities to organizations.
