Experience of intensive care unit nurses dealing with death and the dying

Resumo: Current analysis deals with the manner nurses experience the death process and dying patients. Subjects were ICU nurses. The phenomenological method was employed and data collected through an interview were foregrounded on the basic question: What does it mean to deal with death and with dying patients in your care? Categories indicate that the dying and death experience is an issue that pervades the following topics: 1. therapeutic obstinacy as a pathway in the dying and death process; 2. the difficult living with a poly-professional team and the dying and death process; 3. the dynamics of work and its implications in dying patients and in the death of patients. Health professionals should learn that death and dying are not always a challenge to be overcome but an inalienable part of human life.

Health professionals should learn that death and dying are not always a challenge to be overcome but an inalienable part of human life.El estudio tuvo como objetivo comprender como los enfermeros vivencian el proceso de muerte y el morir de los pacientes. Los sujetos fueron los enfermeros que actúan en una UTI. La metodología utilizada fenomenológica y los datos fueron recolectados por medio de una entrevista con la siguiente cuestión clave: “¿qué es para usted vivenciar la muerte y el morir de un paciente que está bajo sus cuidados?”. Las categorías apuntan que la vivencia de la muerte y el morir es un proceso que pasan las siguientes cuestiones: 1- La obstinación terapéutica como un percance en el proceso de muerte y morir. 2- La difícil convivencia con el equipo multiprofesional y el proceso de muerte y morir. 3- La dinámica del trabajo y sus implicaciones en la muerte y morir de los pacientes. Los profesionales deben comprender que la muerte y el morir no son siempre un reto a ser vencido, sino parte inalienable de la vida.O estudo teve como objetivo compreender como os enfermeiros vivenciam o processo de morte e o morrer dos pacientes. Os sujeitos foram os enfermeiros que atuam em uma UTI. A metodologia utilizada fenomenológica e os dados foram colhidos por meio de uma entrevista com a seguinte questão norteadora: “O que é para você vivenciar a morte e o morrer de um paciente que está sob seus cuidados?”. As categorias apontam que a vivência da morte e o morrer é um processo que permeia as seguintes questões: 1- A obstinação terapêutica como um percalço no processo de morte e morrer. 2- A difícil convivência com a equipe multiprofissional e o processo de morte e morrer. 3- A dinâmica do trabalho e suas implicações na morte e morrer dos pacientes.
