Feelings of mothers of prematurely born babies: nursing implications

Resumo: This is a qualitative case study about the feelings of mothers of prematurely born babies that were at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The research’s main question was: how do you feel about your child being hospitalized? Twenty mothers of premature babies with gestational ages from 31 to 36 weeks were investigated. Bardin’s technique of content analysis was used. Two categories emerged from the mothers’ reports: feelings and events. The results brought up feelings such as sadness, fear, guilt, confidence and hope. To complete the study the author provides a reflection about care procedures to the mother/baby binomial.

La colecta se dió por medio de una entrevista semiestructurada. La cuestión nortedora es: como se siente teniendo su hijo internado? Fueron investigadas 20 madres de bebés prematuros com edad gestacional entre 31 y 36 semanas. Fué utilizada la técnica de Análisis de Contenido de Bardin. Emergieron dos categorías: sentimientos y acontecimientos. Los resultados mostraran los sentimientos: tristeza, miedo, culpa,confianza y esperanz. El estudio propicía una reflexión para la práctica del cuidado al binómio madre/bebé.Estudo qualitativo do tipo estudo de caso com o objetivo de conhecer os sentimentos das mães de bebês prematuros em UTIN. Utilizou-se para coleta uma entrevista semi-estruturada. A questão norteadora foi: como você se sente tendo seu filho internado? Investigou-se 20 mães de bebês com idade gestacional entre 31 e 36 semanas, em outubro e novembro de 2001. As informações analisadas pela técnica de Análise de Conteúdo de Bardin identificaram duas categorias: sentimentos e acontecimentos. Nos resultados apareceram os sentimentos: tristeza, medo, culpa, confiança e esperança.
