Resumo: Case study with mothers of newborn babies submitted to phototherapy held in a maternity in Fortaleza, Brazil. The purpose was identifying the mother’s beliefs and feelings before the treatment. The data were collected in an interview performed with two open questions about the mother’s beliefs and feelings. The result was: 36,5% of the mothers feel fear and sadness; 27,3% with sorrow and fault. Regarding beliefs, 45,5 % of the mothers think that the baby feels uncomfortable; 27,3% of the mothers think that the baby is at risk of life. Conclusion: the mothers feel insecurity and unhappiness before the phototherapy treatment and they think that the treatment is uncomfortable for the newborn.

Los dados fueron colectados en entrevista realizada con dos preguntas abiertas sobre las creencias y sentimientos de las madres. Resultado: 36,5% de las madres sienten miedo y tristeza; 27,3%, tristeza y culpa. Con relación a las creencias, 45,5% de las madres piensan que el bebé se siente incomodado; 27,3%, que el bebé sufre riesgo de vida. Conclusión: las madres sienten inseguridad y tristeza ante el tratamiento fototerápico y piensan ser incómodo para el bebé.Estudo de caso com mães de recém-nascidos submetidos à fototerapia realizado numa maternidade de Fortaleza, Brasil. Objetivou-se identificar as crenças e os sentimentos das mães ante o tratamento. Os dados foram coletados em entrevista realizada com duas questões abertas sobre as crenças e os sentimentos das mães. Resultado: 36,5% das mães sentem medo e tristeza; 27,3%, tristeza e culpa. Com relação às crenças, 45,5% das mães pensam que o bebê está desconfortável; 27,3%, que a criança corre risco de vida.
