Resumo: This descriptive-exploratory study aimed at describing the current situation of postgraduate programs in nursing in Brazil, particularly in the Northeast of Brazil, in terms of trends and expansion perspectives. Statistical data of 2003 were collected using registration tool on Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Programs in Nursing, made available by official research-sponsoring agencies Coordenation for the Improvement of Undergraduate Level Personnel (CAPES) and National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). The results indicated extensive asymmetriesin the Brazilian Post-Graduation System, showing that the expansion of postgraduate programs in nursing in the Northeast of Brazil results from the response capacity to the official demands of the present national post-graduation system.

La recopilación de datos se realizó mediante la aplicación de un instrumento de registro sobre los Programas de Postgrado Stricto Sensu en Enfermería, referente a los datos estadísticos de 2003, disponibilizados en la Coordenación de Perfeccionamento de Personal de Nivel Superior (CAPES) y el Consejo Nacional de Desarrollo Cientifico y Tecnológico (CNPq). Los resultados indicaron fuertes asimetrías en el Sistema Nacional de Programas de Postgrado y evidenciaron que la expansión de los programas de postgrado stricto sensu en Enfermería, en la región nordeste, resulta de su capacidad de respuesta a las demandas oficiales del actual sistema nacional de programas de postgrado.Estudo descritivo-exploratório com o objetivo de traçar um panorama da pós-graduação da enfermagem brasileira, mais especificamente da região Nordeste, apreendendo tendências e perspectivas de expansão nesse espaço geográfico. A coleta de dados foi realizada mediante a aplicação de instrumento de registro sobre os Programas de Pós-Graduação Stricto Sensu em Enfermagem, referentes aos dados estatísticos de 2003, disponibilizados na Comissão de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) e Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq).
