Care of arteriovenous fistula by patients with chronic renal failure.

Resumo: This descriptive study aimed at identifying care of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) performed patients under hemodialysis. Twenty one hemodialysis patients were randomly selected in a clinic in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil:11 female and 11 male patients, age between 30 and 50 yearold, and most were single, retired, and had low education level. Semi-structured interview was applied. The following procedures were mentioned: cleaning the fistula arm, thrill palpation, avoiding lifting weight with AVF arm, arterial pressure checks, taking medication, and blood collection. It was considered that the patients learnt to adapt themselves to the limitations imposed by chronic liver failure on their lives.

Es un estudio descriptivo y cualitativo. Se seleccionaron 21 pacientes en la clínica de hemodiálisis, Fortaleza-CE. Para la toma de datos se utilizó una entrevista semi estructurada, cuyo análisis se realizó en el transcurso de las entrevistas. Los entrevistados tienen de 30 a 50 años, siendo 11 mujeres y 10 hombres, en su mayoría solteros con baja escolaridad y jubilados. Los cuidados citados fueron: ejercicios de compresión manual; higiene del brazo de la fístula; palpación de los frémitos de la FAV; y evitar levantar pesos con el brazo de la FAV; verificar la presión arterial, administrar medicamentos o toma de sangre. Se percibe un resultado positivo relacionado con la capacidad de aprendizaje del paciente para descubrir nuevas maneras de vivir frente a sus limitaciones.Objetivou-se identificar os cuidados com a fístula artério-venosa (FAV) executados pelos pacientes. É um estudo descritivo, desenvolvido com 21 pacientes na clínica de hemodiálise, Fortaleza, CE. Realizou-se uma entrevista semi-estruturada com os pacientes. A idade variou de 30 a 50 anos, 11 mulheres e 10 homens, predominando os solteiros, baixa escolaridade e aposentados. Os cuidados foram: exercícios de compressão manual; higiene do braço da fístula; palpação do frêmito; e evitar no braço da FAV: levantar pesos; verificar a pressão arterial, administrar medicamentos e coletar sangue.
