Resumo: This descriptive study with mothers of children and adolescents carriers of diabetes type1, aims to characterize these children and adolescents enrolled in elementary and high school, either public or private, while in therapy. To reach our purposes, we used direct interviews whose results led us to the following conclusions: most of them (83%) have been carriers of the disease for more than five years; 93.3% had been submitted to hospital treatment, considering hypoglycemia as the most frequent reason (46.7%). It also points toward the need to develop equity while caring for the family of children and adolescents with diabetes type 1, giving them support to cope with the child carrier of a chronic disease.
