Resumo: | This paper investigates the formal services (aggregate and by type of activity) effects on economic growth through panel data analysis of the Brazilian federative units from 2002 to 2019. The evidence indicates that the aggregate sector stimulates economic growth, but the effects of different activities are heterogeneous. While some of them stimulate growth, such as administration, defense, public education and health, and social security; real estate agencies; and information and communication; others have negative impacts, such as transport, storage and mail; accommodation and food; and professional activities. The results reinforce the argument that the relationship between services and economic growth depends on the size of the sector (share in gross value added) and its productivity. Keywords: Services. Economic growth. Brazilian states. Panel data. |

Panel data.
